POSITION:         Bus Monitor

REPORTS TO:     Director of Transportation

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Assists the bus driver in providing safe and efficient transportation for students.

  1. Attend to the special physical, medical, and/or behavioral needs of students as indicated in their IEP, health care plan, or information received from school system specialists providing specific training regarding the needs and safety of the students. This could include loading and unloading of equipment, using bus lift to help student on/off bus, operating medical apparatus, etc.  Assist with emergency evacuation and safety drills.
  2. Assist students to and from classrooms if school personnel fail to be present at the designated area at the schools. Report to supervisor if this continues to occur.
  3. Take classes as required to meet special needs of student(s).

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

 

  1. Must be able to read instructions related to the students’ care and safety.
  2. Must have the ability to write effective statements regarding student performance on the bus or other written documents required by supervisors.
  3. Must have the ability to verbally communicate effectively with parents, school staff and emergency workers if necessary.
  4. Must have the ability to add and subtract 2 digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s.
  5. Must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  6. Must have the ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in routine situations.
  7. Must have the ability to use common sense and knowledge of the student to choose an appropriate course of action in non-routine situations.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Working environment is primarily either within the school bus or outside when assisting exceptional children.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 degrees and below 32 degrees, and will occasionally walk over slippery surfaces.  The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with the public and other workers.  The noise level is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Lift up to 60 lbs applicable to Exceptional Children buses only.
  2. Physically perform basic operational functions such as: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motion.
  3. Must process the visual acuity to operate wheelchair, integrated seat harnesses, and any other special bus equipment, determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned. 

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND CERTIFICATION

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Minimum two years experience working with children preferred.
