POSITION: Behavior Support Specialists
SALARY GRADE: State Salary Schedule commensurate with degree, certification and experience
NATURE OF WORK: The Behavioral Support Specialist is responsible for a broad range of clinical duties, as well as special assignments. General duties include providing classroom consultation; assist with descriptive analysis, functional behavioral assessments and the development and implementation of interim behavioral protocols and behavioral intervention plans.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Has primary responsibility for specialized instruction and services required to meet the unique educational/behavioral needs for identified students with significant behavioral needs.
- Acts as liaison with the public and mental health community for the purpose of supporting individual student development goals.
- Administers programs and services for behaviorally or emotionally disturbed students for the purpose of improved functioning and ensuring program eligibility and compliance with established guidelines.
- Assists in developing interventions, functional behavior assessments and behavior plans for the purpose of providing a safe and effective educational environment for students with challenging behaviors.
- Assists in developing procedures and training materials for district staff involved with students with challenging behaviors for the purpose of enhancing programs for students and ensuring that program operations are in compliance with established guidelines.
- Conducts workshops, training, in-service presentations, etc. in classroom management techniques and other topics for the purpose of developing skills and establishing effective relationships with behaviorally or emotionally disturbed students.
- Coordinates handling of child abuse and neglect cases through contact with school staff and outside agency personnel for the purpose of complying with mandated requirements.
- Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops and committees for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions and remaining knowledgeable with program guidelines.
- Assists the site administrator and teachers in making environmental adjustments for identified student in the school.
- Attend IEP meetings for identified students with behavioral needs.
- Assure that IEP behavioral mandates are filled
- Perform any other duties as requested by the supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Language Skills - Ability to read, analyze and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.
Mathematical Skills - Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability - Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
Computer Skills - Familiarity of basic computer operation and software. Ability to learn various computer operations required for management of student information and integration of technology in classroom instruction.
Other - Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on the division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and use fingers, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms. Specific visual abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Occasionally the employee will lift up to 50 lbs. such as to lift files, paper, school supplies, books, etc.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee continuously interacts with the public and staff.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: NC Teacher Licensure Classroom Teaching Experience working with students with Behavioral Disorders
EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated regularly by the supervisor in accordance with Board Policy.
