POSITION: Bus Driver

 

SALARY STARTING AT $15.00 /HOUR   

 

NATURE OF WORK: The employee operates school buses transporting students on established routes according to a time schedule, while complying with all traffic regulations.  Guidelines and procedures are set forth in the Bus Driver Manual.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

  • Drives school bus safely and professionally.
  • Performs and properly completes daily pre-trip inspections.
  • Complies with all traffic rules and regulations.
  • Complies with discipline policies set forth in the School Code of Conduct for Transportation.
  • Participates in on-site training.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in handling and maneuvering school bus.
  • Maintains safe and orderly environment on the bus.
  • Supervises the safe loading and unloading of students.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Education/Background - High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).  Must have no points on driving record and be able to pass required physical exam including drug test.
  • Certificates/Licenses/Registrations - Must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), and pass State Skill Test and State Written Test
  • Other Skills - Ability to work in a friendly manner with co-workers and students.  Ability to read and understand maps.  Ability to pass State Skill Test, State Written Test, Department of Transportation physical and MDE Basic Training Program.  Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
  • Physical Demands - While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously required to sit and occasionally walk or stand.  The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job.  The employee frequently repeats the same hand, arm or finger motion many times.  The employee frequently uses hand strength to grasp tools, and is continuously driving on the job.  The employee must occasionally lift, and/or move up to 75 pounds applicable to Exceptional Children buses only.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and peripheral vision.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Considerable knowledge of safe and efficient practices and procedures used in the operation of a school bus.

 

Considerable knowledge of traffic laws and school bus regulations.

 

Considerable knowledge of safety regulations and standards for school buses. General knowledge of Transportation Department Operating Instructions.

 

Ability to physically inspect the bus according to Transportation Department Operating Instructions.

 

Ability to detect and report observable mechanical defects or failures on the school bus.

 

Ability to maintain discipline of students assigned to ride the school bus. Ability to maintain a clean school bus.

Ability to complete required reports.

 

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

 

Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in applying standards to a variety of work situations.

 

Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with parents/guardians or students and with school personnel.

 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

 

 

Work Environment - While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 degrees and below 32 degrees, and will occasionally walk over slippery surfaces.  The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with the public and other workers.  The employee has direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of others.  The noise level is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
