POSITION: Family and Consumer Science (FACS) High School Teacher
REPORTS TO: Principal
SALARY GRADE: State Salary Schedule plus local supplement
NATURE OF WORK: A teacher in this position provides direct instruction to high school students in the Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) Education program. The teacher empowers individuals to manage the challenges of living and working in a diverse global society. Students develop human literacy as they master a complex set of essential skills and knowledge needed to achieve quality of life. They gain career preparedness as they acquire readiness to participate in a rapidly changing workforce and global economy. A wide variety of tasks are performed in the teaching-learning process for students, the primary one being to help students learn the subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible adults. A teacher performs his/her duties under the supervision of, and reports to, the principal.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Additional Duties may be assigned.
- Teaches District approved curriculum
- Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated
- Plans a program of study, employing a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students
- Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
- Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules
- Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students
- Assists in diagnosing the learning disabilities of students, with the assistance of district specialists
- Evaluates pupils' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports
- Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations
- Is available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day
- Engages students in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), a national student organization for middle and high school students that promotes youth-centered leadership and opportunities for contextual learning
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS: Previous experience as a CTE FACS teacher is preferred. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals consistent with the duties of this position
- Ability to compose and write routine reports consistent with the duties of this position
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, staff and the general public consistent with the duties of this position
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Language Skills - Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Mathematical Skills - Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability - Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Computer Skills - Familiarity with basic computer operation and software. Ability to learn various computer operations required for management of student information and integration of technology in classroom instruction.
Work Environment - The work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee may encounter, and include a noise level that is usually moderate to loud. Other - Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and use fingers, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms. Specific visual abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and depth perception. Occasionally the employee will lift up to 50 lbs. such as to lift files and paper.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree: General Family and Consumer Sciences
- Passing score on Praxis II Test in subject area to be taught
- Valid N.C. FACS General teaching license/certificate, or be able to obtain such
WORK EXPERIENCE:
- Two years industry-related work experience within the past five years
- Examples of industry-related work experience: interior designer, cafeteria manager, food service manager, extension specialist, adult education, preschool/day care director, social worker, family counselor, financial planner, community service manager, community health educator
EVALUATION:
Performance in this position will be evaluated regularly by the supervisor in accordance with Board Policy.
